The short version
- ·We collect reasons for living that people voluntarily share.
- ·You do not need an account. We do not know who you are.
- ·Demographics (age, gender, region) are optional — used only to help others find reasons from people like them.
- ·Your reason goes through moderation before appearing publicly.
- ·We will never sell, license, or share your data with any commercial entity.
- ·Want your reason removed? Use your deletion code.
- ·This is not a crisis service. If you're in immediate danger, please contact your local crisis line.
- ·If we ever use aggregated data for research, it goes through independent ethics review first.
1. What this service is (and isn't)
Reason for Living is a platform where people share anonymous reasons for living. It is operated by Destare Foundation, a registered NGO.
THIS IS
- A prevention and awareness tool
- A space to contribute and read others' reasons
- A complement to professional support
THIS IS NOT
- A crisis intervention service
- A substitute for professional care
- A therapy tool or clinical intervention
2. What we collect
When you browse
No personally identifiable information. No cookies beyond essential functionality. No IP logging for analytics. No third-party trackers.
When you contribute a reason
- Required: Your reason for living (max 280 characters)
- Optional: Age range, gender, country/region, heart status
- Generated: Unique deletion code, timestamp, language
We do not collect: name, email, IP address (hashed only for abuse prevention, deleted after 72 hours), device identifiers, or any other PII.
3. How we use your data
Your reason
- Reviewed by human moderators before public display
- Displayed anonymously on the website
- Available for social media sharing as a generated card (your choice)
Your demographics (if provided)
- Used solely for filtering — so visitors can find reasons from people like them
- Displayed only in aggregate — individual profiles are never shown
- Subject to minimum cell size protection (10+ results)
Aggregated research use (future)
If anonymized data is ever used for research, it will be reviewed by an independent ethics committee, subject to formal ethics review, published only in aggregate form, completely separated from commercial application, and disclosed transparently on this page.
4. What we will NEVER do
These are constitutional principles, not policies. They are embedded in Destare Foundation's governance and cannot be changed by any single decision-maker.
- NEVERSell, license, or share data with commercial entities — not for AI training, not for pharma research, not for advertising, not for anything monetized
- NEVERAttempt to identify contributors — we don't have the data to do this, by design
- NEVERUse your reason to train commercial AI models
- NEVERContact you — we don't have your contact information
- NEVERShare individual submissions with third parties
5. Your rights
Right to deletion
At submission, you receive a unique deletion code. Visit reason-for-living.org/delete, enter your code, and your reason is removed from public display within 24 hours and permanently deleted within 30 days.
Lost your code? Contact [email protected] with as much detail as you remember.
Right to access (GDPR Article 15)
Submissions are anonymous — we cannot verify identity for access requests. Your deletion code serves as your access token.
Right to data portability (GDPR Article 20)
You can export your submitted reason and associated metadata using your deletion code.
Right to object (GDPR Article 21)
Object to any processing by using your deletion code to delete your submission, or by contacting [email protected].
6. Data storage and security
- Data stored in Supabase (PostgreSQL), hosted within the EU
- All data encrypted at rest and in transit
- Database access restricted to authorized Destare Foundation personnel
- Moderation queue access restricted to trained moderators
- Abuse-prevention IP hashes automatically deleted after 72 hours
- Regular security audits (quarterly at minimum)
7. Content moderation
What gets published
- AI-assisted initial screening flags potentially harmful content
- Human moderators review all flagged content and random samples
- Only approved content appears publicly
What gets rejected
- Pro-suicide or pro-self-harm content
- Content containing methods or means
- Content that could identify individuals
- Spam, trolling, or deliberately harmful submissions
Moderation principles
- We do not reject reasons for being “negative” — “I'm alive out of spite” is valid
- We do not curate for positivity — raw and real is the standard
- We moderate for safety, not tone
- We err on the side of caution
Content moderators have access to psychological support and regular debriefing sessions. No moderator works alone.
8. Social media sharing
- Share cards contain only your reason text, heart icon, and site URL
- No demographic data is included on the card
- Sharing is your choice — we do not auto-post anything
- We do not track or collect data about shares
9. Children and minors
This service is available to people aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. Future versions may include age-appropriate access for younger users, developed with child psychologists and youth mental health organizations.
10. Changes to these terms
- Prominent notice on the website for at least 30 days
- Updated “last updated” date
- Section 4 (“What we will NEVER do”) will never change — those are permanent commitments
11. Mandatory reporting disclosure
This platform is anonymous. We do not collect identifying information and cannot identify contributors. We cannot and do not make reports to authorities based on submitted content.
If you are in immediate danger: you are important. You are valid. The world needs you in it — please reach out to someone who can be with you right now.
12. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
Our legal basis for contributed data is explicit consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), obtained through the consent screen before submission. For abuse-prevention IP hashing, our basis is legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
